Ben Richmond's 8-Bit College was one of the first webcomics I read (alongside another Kineman.com comic, Tales from the Relativistic School Bus). Despite its minimalist design approach the sharp writing, comedic sense, and ability to connect with its audience made it a top 10 comic for most of its life.
8-Bit College inspired my creative spark to do a few little webcomics for my friends, and I gave my inspiration the nod four times. I made two guest comics (the first quasi-solicited), made a reference to one of Ben's famous background posters in Sprite 'Drew #4, and I was the first person to buy ad space at 8-bit college.
The resulting traffic was big enough to push me over the bandwidth limit back at Sprite U.'s old Angelfire home, and directly lead to the switch to Keenspace. The copy for the ad read "Proudly ripping off 8-Bit College for nearly three months." In turn, it lead to the second catch phrase for Sprite U's banner, "Transcending Obscurity." This was the rebirth of the comic as something more than in-jokes for my friends, and tried to reinvent it for an outside audience. It wouldn't be until the reset button was pushed that this would actually succeed.

Although all the original 8-Bit College comics were lost from a hard drive crash (if I recall correctly) I have a few old favorites that I saved when they first posted. Now I share them with you in this little shire to Ben's first comic. His second was hand-drawn, called Walking is Still Honest. His domain for the comic vanished in the waning months of 2005, but most of it survives in a fan archive at http://www.walkingisstillhonest.com/. This archive will close when the domain expires on March 9th, 2008. Get 'em while they're hot.

And now, the only remains of 8-Bit College:
